What is Responsible Investment?

The term ‘Responsible Investment’ describes the integration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) risk assessment into mainstream investment practices. Many funds and fund managers have signed up to the UN Principles for Responsible Investment (UN PRI), a framework that was devised in 2005-2006 from a process involving the largest institutional investors in the world. The participants of that process felt that there was insufficient integration of ESG risk assessment in mainstream investment practices.

Responsible investment is about improving the knowledge base upon which investment decisions are made rather than screening out categories of investment opportunities based on moral or ethical grounds.
